The Rainbow Hub solution includes ALE devices (deskphones, DECT base stations, and handsets) that are fully integrated into the system, ensuring a consistent and rich user experience. These devices leverage Rainbow Hub's user-centric, multi-device, multimedia, and collaborative features, and are deployed and managed through the Zero Touch mechanism for a seamless management experience.
The Generic SIP device feature allows the integration of complementary devices, enhancing the Rainbow Hub ecosystem with specific devices such as conference phones, Analog Terminal Adapters (ATA), doorphones, and various SIP phones.
Manual Configuration of Generic SIP Devices
Automated provisioning is not available for these devices, so they must be configured manually. The required parameters are:
-
Connection credentials and domain: obtained from the Rainbow Web Admin interface:
- SIP Domain, SIP Username, and password
- Rainbow server certificate chain for authenticating Rainbow servers
Detailed instructions for setting up these devices can be found in the following article: Setting up Rainbow Hub to interconnect third-party SIP extensions
Important Note on Third-Party SIP Deskphones
The intention behind this feature is not to support large-scale deployments of third-party SIP deskphones. However, it can be used to integrate existing devices when appropriate. ALE cannot provide support for such configurations, as the user experience cannot match that of ALE deskphones.
Common limitations include:
- CLI issues: problems with CLI display on the phone
- No unified presence: telephony status of these devices is not reflected on Rainbow clients
- No call control from Rainbow applications: calls cannot be made from the computer with audio on the phone; only computer mode is available
- Conflict between local phone services and centrally managed multi-device services (DND, Forward, BLF keys status not consistently managed between Rainbow clients and third-party phones)
- SIP interoperability issues: potential problems with Rainbow and SIP provider ecosystems due to the sometimes unclear nature of the protocol
Supported Devices
Currently, there is no specific program to officially certify the interoperability of these devices with Rainbow Hub. However, ALE provides reference guides for devices that have been successfully implemented in known deployments. Partners who identify the need for additional complementary devices can conduct initial trials and contact ALE to share interoperability results.
